About Romertopf Clay Baker

To bring the ancient art of healthy clay pot cooking into modern kitchens through premium German-crafted cookware that preserves nutrients, enhances flavors, and simplifies meal preparation.

How Römertopf Was Born

We began our journey in 1967 when the ceramics company Eduard Bay GmbH launched the Römertopf at the Hanover Fair, Germany's foremost consumer goods trade fair at the time. The name Römertopf was chosen because of the Romans' great love of food, and we adopted the slogan 'Ideas for natural dishes' to guide our mission. At first, buyers were not particularly interested in clay utensils, but excellent marketing and impeccable quality quickly brought us into the ranks of national brands and made our name famous far beyond Germany's borders.

In 1997, the Römertopf brand passed into Römertopf Keramik GmbH & Co. KG, which continued to produce our traditional vessels from Westerwald natural clay. Over the decades, more than 25 million Römertopf products have been sold worldwide, and this figure continues to grow. We don't just produce dishes — we teach people how to use clay kitchen utensils, invent and distribute new recipes, and adapt old classics in accordance with modern trends in healthy eating.

Our production has always been rooted in the Westerwald region, using locally sourced natural clay that is millions of years old. All materials for manufacturing, from the clay to the glazes to the packaging, have traditionally come from Germany. After facing insolvency in 2023, the brand was acquired by new investors committed to continuing production in Western Europe while developing new product lines to bring Römertopf to a younger generation.

The Technology

At the core of Römertopf is Dunstgaren steam-cooking method using porous Westerwald natural clay that is soaked before use, releasing moisture during cooking to create a self-basting effect.
